After Damien, Ro, and Bass haul up my brand-new mattress I don’t leave it for nearly a week, which is fine since that’s how long I’m suspended for. I’m just lucky they’re letting me graduate. Apparently, a few kids stepped forward when the principal questioned the witnesses about the blood in the grass. Sophomores with consciences.

I sleep through most of the first forty-eight hours, only breaching the surface to guzzle water. Food makes my teeth tremble and I’m constantly itchy. My skin pulls tight and my bones ache, but Sofia’s regular visits settle me. She’s just as capable as Erin, and better at dealing with people.

“What if we cook the ham?” I say on day six. I left the house briefly last night to go on a short drive with Damien. He, Freddie, Ro, Bass, Ralph, and Jessica have been on rotation, checking in on me when Mom can’t. The attention feels a little undeserved, overwhelming, but it’s the only stimulation I’m allowed. My skins call out to me every night when I try to sleep, begging like dogs on short leashes, but Mom’s already threatened to take them from me twice, so I don’t give in to temptation.

“We don’t know how to cook ham,” Mom replies, flicking through the channels.

I sprawl out on the Lazy Boy across from the TV. “Ralph does.”

“He has a bar to run.”

“He spent two hours with me the other day making me sharpen his knives. I’m sure he can spare a couple more teaching us to become housewives.”

“I was a housewife, thanks.”

“Apparently not a good one.”

She groans and picks up her phone, evidently sick of my constant company.

Ralph’s over in less than twenty minutes.

“Where are your spices?” He opens all the cupboards, letting pots spill onto the floor. He coughs on the dust collected in our blender.

I’m working on clearing the table of mail and take-out containers. My arms and legs are weak, and my side pulls, but it feels good to be on my feet. “There’s salt and pepper by the stove.”

He turns on me. “Oh, child, you poor, starved thing.”

Ralph rings Jessica and rambles off a list of things she needs to pick up on the way over. “… and don’t forget the liquor store.”

Freddie calls me in the middle of searching for the biggest covered pot we have. “Yes, Freddie?”

“What are you doing?”

“Cooking a ham.”

“I’m coming over. Is Damien there?”

“No.” But if this turns into a party, he should be. A thrill starts in my stomach and works its way up my chest.

“Liam’s letting me have the car to pick up Ro from work since his cock machine is in the garage.”

“So you’re bringing Ro?”

“I was just going to leave him at the site, make him run back.”

“Bring him, and Bass, too.”

“Why?”

“It’ll put more people between you and Damien.”

He hangs up.

I text Damien. I’m cooking a ham just for you.

It doesn’t take long to get a response: Are you literally cooking, or are you just trying to flirt?

Ralph’s at the helm, I’m just supervising.
